Saturday, 9:00 am update.

 

According to our scouts, the trail is in great shape.  Except for a few very small patches, the first ½ mile of the trail is clear and dry.  These photos show the WORST parts of the first ½ mile.

The trees shade the last section of the trail however, so it is still covered with snow and ice. People can either turn around at the last bench, or if they want to go to the very end, they can easily navigate it by walking to the side of the paved trail.

Friday, 4:00 pm update

Looks like clear skies tomorrow!  Check back tomorrow for snow, ice conditions on the trail.

WHEN?

  • *If no moon, hike will be held on Sunday, December 15, same time
     

WHERE?

  • Merrimack River Greenway Trail (MRGT) Sunflower Field parking lot. Look for the kiosk behind Buffalo Wild Wings.

 

WHAT?

  • Moonlight group hike along the Merrimack River Greenway Trail near Concord's sunflower fields, led by Greg, an engineer, amateur astronomer, and Trustee of the Friends of the MRGT.

  • Moon viewing with the NH Astronomical Society.

  • Heavy rain/inclement weather cancels this activity.

  • Bring water, headlamps/flashlights and layers for the weather.

FAQs

What's involved?

  • A guided walk along the newly completed 3/4-mile long "Sunflower Section" of the MRGT.

  • Weather cooperating, telescopes will be set up so you can take a closer look at the moon and stars.
     

​Is registration required?

  •  No. Registration is optional. To sign up for notices of last minute changes, including last minute postponement or cancellation, use the form below.​​

How long will the event last?

  • Volunteers will be around until at least 8:00pm.

Is the event "rain or shine"?

  • No.
     

  • In case of cloudiness on the 14th, both the walk and the stargazing will be postponed to 6:00pm on December 15.
     

  • In case of cloudiness on the 15th, the stargazing will be cancelled but the walk will go on (unless the weather is inclement).
     

  • Any last minute changes will be announced via email message to registrants.
     

What should I bring?

  • Dress appropriately for the weather. If there's snow on the trail, consider bringing XC skis, snowshoes, or microspikes.

Is there an age limit?

  • Minors should be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Are dogs permitted?

  • Well behaved, people-friendly dogs, on leashes, are welcome. Please pick up after your dog.
     

Are there any other requirements?

  • No. All are welcome and the trail is fully accessible.
